Open access journal
A typical traditional journal publishing journey starts with the authors submitting their manuscripts to publishers. Then go throught a peer review process to confirm whether the manuscript could be published. It's very common that the author authorizes the publisher, and the publisher pays the publishing costs through sales. Readers must order to read the full text. This model takes a long time from submission to publication, and only subscribers can read the full text, so the readership is limited.
What is an Open Access Journal
Open access journals are journals whose articles are available and reusable worldwide free of charge and without restrictions immediately on publication. (from open-access.network , see more)
As journal subscription fees have continued to rise in recent years and the idea of "open science" has become more prevailing, the scholarly publishing model of open access journals has emerged accordingly. The author submits the manuscript to the publisher, and go throuth the peer review process, so does the conventional publishing. It is changed to the author or subsidies from universities and research institutions to pay APCs (article processing charges) to cover publishing costs.
Advantages of Open Access Journals
- Expand the readership and increase the visibility of research outcomes worldwide
- Increase the citation rate of research output
- Promote academic exchange and provide free access to more research resources
- Publishing process is faster than conventional journals and research results can be made public more rapidly
